NTE5 master telephone socket and broadband - information

Rutland Telecom is contractually obliged to to provide a broadband service up to your NTE5 master socket. Broadband often works from other internal extensions but disconnection issues and reduced speed can be experienced.

The master socket is distinguished from other internal telephone extensions by having the face plate in 2 halves (the 2 screws and the socket for the phone are not in the middle but towards the bottom). Some premises do not have these sockets.

Broadband usually works best when your router is connected to the master socket. They are essential for our subloop-VDSL installations. If you do not have one we can arrange to have one fitted - costing from £65 depending on the complexity of your internal wiring and where you want to place your router. Some master sockets may require an additional special face-plate filter installing to eliminate problems associated with your other internal telephonne extensions linked back to the master socket. This work is chargeable.

The definitive test for broadband using an isolated master socket NTE5

The lower half of the master socket can be temporarily unscrewed to reveal an inner socket. This isolates all your internal phones and is done at your own risk. You then plug your broadband filter into the exposed telephone socket (seen here on the left), and your router is connected into the filter whilst running tests. If your broadband does not work (and you are sure your filter, router and computer are ok) then the problem is ours to resolve at no charge. If it does work, but does not with the face plate back on, a chargeable visit is required to resolve your internal telephone wiring issues.

Sometimes we have to involve BT Openreach who maintain your phone line for us. You must not touch the wiring inside the NTE5 master socket (towards the back as opposed to any internal wiring connected to the back of the face plate). This is a legal requirement. If in doubt please ask us.
